Viscosupplementation (Durolane)

Viscosupplementation means the addition of a viscous – jelly-like – substance into the joint. Primarily targeted at knees, they can offer good long lasting relief when effective.

Normal synovial fluid is what is known as a “Non-Newtonian Fluid”. This means that it thickens up when pressure is applied to it – acting like a shock absorbing material. There are many synthetic products available now which exhibit similar characteristics and can be used to lubricate and provide comfort to the joint. Mr Waters tends to use Durolane which has demonstrated effectiveness in treating knee osteoarthritis.

In our experience, long lasting relief is obtained in patients who respond to it but that is in probably around 70% of cases.
